Project Goal

Building the Abu Dhabi Spatial Digital Twin System is mandated to the Spatial Data Division (SDD) at the Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT). The Abu Dhabi Digital Twin System, called Smart Makani, should unify the spatial data model and application portal for the three Municipalities and the Transport Center. The system will provide the Planners/Engineers/Inspectors with various independent instances but a shared database, tools, and services. The system has an easy configuration to automate the creation of instances, adding themes, having various data sets, and creating and updating the data catalog. The system allows users to access different data sets, features, attributes, tools, printing templates, and develop groups with user-based accessibility.
The system should have 2D/3D/4D capability, should integrate with the real-time operating system and workflows, and present the results on various dashboards. The system should be hybrid, allowing multiple technologies.

Business Problem Solved

Smart Makani, "The unified digital twin spatial platform," was successfully launched and operated since mid-2021 for the department and three municipalities (Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and Al Dhafrah) as well as the Transport Center. The system can provide digital twin services based on 2D, 3D, and 4D modeling and have over 150 spatial tools. The Digital Twin fulfills the virtual model of the actual realization and presentation of the natural terrain and man-made structures in 2D and 3D, which is time-aware by incorporating time as the fourth dimension. Abu Dhabi Digital Twin mimics the actual workflow and transactional processes to update the digital data model for new creations such as buildings, streets, landscapes, projects, etc.
The Smart Makani application is a spatial application encompassing an admin and client module that provides uncomplicated and user-friendly portal to create varying instances, adding data sets, plethora of tools and completely inbuilt print module

Technology Implemented

Smart Makani system is built based on the ESRI Enterprise Solution, integrated with the digital task management workflow system and the automation of data versioning using a customized version of the workflow manager, Data verification, and Data Reviewer. In addition, the 3D visualization portal component of the system to compare current and future masterplans has been integrated into the system using City Engine. Smart Makani utilizing the following technologies: ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS for Desktop, ArcGIS for Server, FME, Open layers3 GDAL (Geospatial Data Abstraction Library), QGIS, NTS (.NET Topology Suite) Geoserver WPS, Mapbox Api, ESRI Javascript Api, Signal R, .Net Entity Framework and Angular,, Data Reviewer, Workflow Engine, Operations Dashboard for performance application Monitoring, Insight, City Engine, vector tilling and raster caching, Story Map and latest ESRI data store technologies.
