Project Goal

The NatureServe Network biodiversity database delivers information on the status and mapped distribution of more than 70,000 plants, animals and ecosystems. Our information products provide decision-quality data that is accessed more than 6 million times a year by practitioners and decision makers in the public and private sectors to enhance the protection and management of natural resources under their stewardship. In 2015 we initiated a project with the Esri Nonprofit Organization Program to prepare and publish a suite of NatureServe data, maps and apps through ArcGIS Marketplace to elevate these resources to the widest possible audiences.

Business Problem Solved

NatureServe is partnering with Esri to build Conservation Information Systems that empower everyone to make better decisions. By pairing NatureServe’s unique data with the power of Esri’s Web GIS platform, we are building turnkey solutions for executives, researchers, businesses and casual users alike. One example solution now deployed in six state agencies is NatureServe’s Environmental Review Tool. This tool, built on ArcGIS for Server, supports the agencies’ evaluation of projects for potential impacts to threatened, endangered, and special concern species.

Technology Implemented

We use Esri GIS technology to transform authoritative biodiversity data into knowledge. Our team of spatial analysts use the ArcGIS for Desktop suite to map and model species and ecosystem distributions. Our tool developers deploy web mapping applications using ArcGIS for Server, ArcGIS Online, and ArcGIS API for JavaScript.
