Project Goal
The City of Altamonte Springs reorganized their GIS in 2011. By investing in new hardware, software, personnel, training and conferences over the years, the City has laid out a foundation for Enterprise GIS which integrates ArcGIS for Server, ArcGIS Online, and, as of 2015, a Small Government Enterprise License Agreement. The City transitioned from having multiple departments with isolated data silos to a full Enterprise GIS System and a web presence for both the general public and City employees. This has all been accomplished in-house with the full support of the IS Director, City Manager, Commissioners, and Mayor.Business Problem Solved
Not too long ago, the City didn’t have a GIS department or formally trained or dedicated GIS staff. Originally, GIS only existed in the Public Works and Planning departments which had AutoCAD employees with self-taught GIS experience. Each department utilized different GIS software and kept their data in disconnected silos. Today, the City has a GIS division under the Information Services (IS) department with three full-time, formally trained GIS staff members and centralized data across all departments. The City is also adopting new Enterprise Resource Planning software with the City’s GIS data at its core. The City also works with the County by sharing data with each other and collaborating on projects together.
