Project Goal

The NJTPA has developed a number of tools and applications that support its core mission. They include innovative uses of geographical information systems (GIS), mobile technology, transportation models, data visualizations and more. These tools support NJTPA planning activities and the work of partners, including analysis, outreach and visioning that shape the NJTPA Regional Transportation Plan.

A sample of NJTPA tools include:
NJTPA Online Transportation Information System (NOTIS)is an interactive tool that allows you to explore how your state and federal tax dollars are being invested to improve the transportation system; The NJTPA Open Data Portal is the central data repository for publically available geospatial data; and The NJTPA Planning Visualization Tools, or "ViZtools," illustrates how a wide range of factors relate to the multiple facets of regional planning.

Business Problem Solved

NOTIS, the NJTPA Open Data Portal and ViZtools all offer a number of business solutions.

NOTIS - allows users to explore how their state and federal tax dollars are being invested to improve the transportation system in the 13-county northern New Jersey region. NOTIS allows the NJTPA to be transparent about the over $2 billion spent each year in state and federal funding showing how transportation projects and programs are invested in throughout the northern New Jersey region.

NJTPA Open Data Portal - allows the NJTPA to share data with its subregions (13 counties, totaling 384 municipalities), partner agencies and the public. Data ranges from environmental related datasets to economic, transportation, and equity.

ViZtools - makes the technical knowledge of planning agencies more accessible to the general public and sets the stage for meaningful dialogue about planning challenges. ViZtools includes three key elements: Assess Current Conditions, View Forecasts and Sketch a Scenario

Technology Implemented

These three tools leverage the NJTPA's investment in ArcGIS for Server: ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS API for JavaScript and SQL Server on the back-end.
