Project Goal

The goal of the project was to modernize the GIS environment of a large water/wastewater utility company. As early adopters, GIS technologies have been in use at WSSC for over 30 years.

The establishment of the GIS portal and the migration of the GIS web apps to the new portal environment, along with the upgrade of the server software, database, and desktop environment to current and fully supported versions, have improved the overall efficiency and effectiveness of the WSSC GIS infrastructure.

In addition to the overall modernization of the GIS infrastructure, the team also managed the release of a new application each year for the past seven years, based on the new architecture, including the following.

EGIS, WERI, Boil water alerts, H2O alerts, APC-Agency Project Coordination, IYN-In Your Neighborhood, Watershed mobile application, and Map services that supports permits, project reporting tool Primavera P6, billing systems, and WAM (Work and Asset Management Syste

Business Problem Solved

There was a need to make use of newer/faster solutions, especially in new hybrid environments, to meet customer demand. As an organization, WSSC had many older technologies and workflows in use by staff. Systems were not fully integrated and required some manual interventions. In order to address current and planned needs, the GIS infrastructure would need to the stability and capacity to meet these new demands. Additionally, Compliance with security standards, risk mitigation, and disaster recovery would need a modern environment.

Many process, like project mapping and maintenance integration processes and methods were not fully automated or standardized.
