Project Goal
The City of Salem Public Works Department has been on a multi-year digital enablement journey investing in several different GIS technology stacks. The journey is not over, but substantial mileposts have been reached. The overall goal is to cause efficiency to grow, decision makers to be informed, and reporting to be accurate resulting in transparency.Business Problem Solved
The department has started with three main initiatives:
1) The department has implemented storing all imagery in mosaic datasets in SDE including imagery collected using drones and processed through ArcGIS Site Scan. Imagery is now served to the organization using Image Server and overall more accessible.
2) Balancing data management needs of linear assets vs diverse reporting needs has been challenging and often conflicts. ArcGIS Roads and Highways was selected as the platform to address this business challenge. The system allows complex queries to be built without need to “break” or “segment” the underlying linear feature to answer questions, enabling the system of record to remain intact. The department also plans to incorporate newly collected AI feature extracted transportation assets into the system.
3) The department has pivoted in policy enacting a GIS centric approach to asset management. GIS is now the system of record for assets, and Cityworks is being implemented
Technology Implemented
ArcGIS Enterprise and Portal, ArcGIS Online, Image Server, Site Scan for ArcGIS, ArcGIS Roads and Highways, and Experience Builder. ESRI Partner Solutions: Nearmap, Cyclomedia, and Cityworks.
