Water Utility of Thessaloniki

Project Goal

Thessaloniki Water & Sewer Company S.A. has been using GIS technology for nearly three decades. Initially, GIS focused on enabling cost- and time-efficient asset management. Over time, the integration of technologies such as mobile mapping enhanced these capabilities, making them more advanced and precise.

As GIS and IT evolved, the objective became the gradual transformation of GIS from a traditional mapping tool into a core business component within the company’s IT environment.

Today, GIS functions as a key Business Intelligence system, enabling process automation across departments, integrating platforms such as ERP, and supporting operations including asset management, customer care, billing, SCADA, hydraulic modeling, fleet management, and smart metering.

GIS is now an organizational pillar, driving integration, automation, and the dissolution of information silos, supporting cost- and time-effective services.

Business Problem Solved

The organization faced fragmented workflows and disconnected data across departments, resulting in inefficiencies, delays, and increased operational costs. Core functions such as asset management, customer care & billing operated as isolated silos, limiting transparency and coordination.

By establishing GIS as an enterprise integration layer, we succeeded in unifying systems and processes, enabling seamless data exchange between diversified disciplines. This eliminated information silos, reduced manual interventions, and delivered significant time and cost savings.

A key example is the GIS Smart Meter Replacement Program: customer requests are initiated centrally, field updates are captured in real time, project progress is monitored continuously, and billing systems are automatically updated.

This end-to-end integration provides a holistic view of each process, democratized access to critical data, and enables faster, more informed decision-making across all organizational le
