Project Goal
HK Electric, a pioneer in Hong Kong’s GIS adoption since the 1980s, operates one of the world’s most reliable power networks. To modernise its mission critical GIS while sustaining this exceptional performance, the project focused on transitioning HK Electric from a heavily customised legacy system to a modern, standard based ArcGIS Platform. With ArcGIS Utility Network at its core, the initiative aimed to embed data integrity, strengthen network modelling discipline, streamline operational workflows, and establish a sustainable, future-ready platform to support the continued evolution of Hong Kong’s highly interconnected electricity infrastructure.Business Problem Solved
By adopting the ArcGIS Platform with the ArcGIS Utility Network at its core, HK Electric successfully resolved the longstanding challenges of its heavily customised legacy GIS. Transitioning from a highly customised application to a standard based, model driven commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) environment eliminated complex bespoke processes, enforced data integrity through embedded connectivity rules, and ensured accurate, consistent representation of the physical network. The introduction of automated network diagram generation ensured alignment between spatial data and operational schematics, while modern web and mobile tools provided reliable, up-to-date asset information to both field and office teams. Collectively, these improvements strengthened system stability, enhanced data governance, and established a sustainable foundation for future network development.
