ActionAid Liberia (AAL)

Project Goal

The SPA II Project, implemented by ActionAid Liberia with support from DANIDA, seeks to advance climate justice, inclusive governance, and resilient livelihoods by strengthening the leadership and participation of young people, women, and marginalized communities in Liberia. The project promotes a human rights–based approach that supports youth movements, community organizations, and social enterprises to influence policies, demand accountability, and drive locally led solutions to climate and development challenges. Through capacity strengthening, partnerships, and support to climate-smart agriculture and agroecology initiatives, SPA II aims to enhance sustainable livelihoods, increase community resilience to climate impacts, and empower youth to lead transformative local climate actions. Ultimately, the project contributes to building more equitable, just, and sustainable communities across Liberia.

Business Problem Solved

Many young people, women, and marginalized communities in Liberia face limited economic opportunities, low participation in decision-making, and weak access to climate-resilient livelihoods. Climate change continues to threaten agriculture and rural incomes, while youth-led groups and social enterprises often lack the capacity, resources, and support to develop sustainable solutions.

The project addresses this gap by strengthening the capacity of youth movements, social enterprises, and community organizations to promote climate-smart agriculture, agroecology, and sustainable livelihoods, while increasing youth leadership and community participation in development and climate action.

Technology Implemented

The project uses digital communication tools and climate-smart agricultural practices to support implementation and coordination. Mobile phones, social media, and digital documentation tools are used for awareness, coordination, and knowledge sharing among youth groups, partners, and communities. Digital surveys and reporting systems support monitoring and data collection.

The project also promotes agro-ecology practices, including compost production, plant-based pesticides, and other organic soil improvement methods to replace chemical fertilizers and pesticides. These approaches support organic farming, environmental protection, and climate-resilient livelihoods for youth social enterprises and rural communities.
