City of Marion

Project Goal

Our city is growing rapidly, and our public safety services must grow with it. This project evaluated potential sites for relocating an existing fire station and identified properties suitable for an additional station. Using Service Area Network Analysis, we mapped 4 minute response zones for each station. The network dataset was updated to incorporate more realistic turn delays for large fire trucks, as the standard 2 second delay does not accurately reflect actual turning times and can introduce error into response zone calculations. These adjusted delays provide a more accurate representation of each station’s true capabilities.
With the updated network, we assessed how different relocation options affected their coverage areas. We then used Business Analyst to compare population, housing, and business coverage within the revised 4-minute response zones. The recommended relocation site was selected based on the option that produced the greatest improvement in overall coverage.

Business Problem Solved

The core question was whether the fire department should renovate the existing station or relocate it. The goal was to determine whether relocation would meaningfully improve service to the community.

Technology Implemented

This project utilized Service Area Network Analysis in ArcGIS Pro to model response zones. ArcGIS Online was used for data management and sharing, and Business Analyst—specifically the Fire District Profile included with the Fire Accreditation Solution—was used to compare demographic coverage within the 4-minute response areas.
