Slovak Road Administration

Project Goal

The goal of the project was to extend the Information System of the Road Network Model with new data processing workflows supporting a mobile mapping system and its resulting data types, to introduce a technical standard for a multilevel linear referencing model, and to modernize the overall technology platform. This included the transition of web applications from ArcGIS Maps SDK for JavaScript 3.x to 4.x, as well as the migration of hardware infrastructure to the Microsoft Azure cloud environment.

Business Problem Solved

The Information System of the Road Network Model provides the technical foundation and authoritative data for the entire road network of Slovakia. Its history and integration with ArcGIS span several decades.

The incorporation of a mobile mapping system into the portfolio of existing data capture technologies introduced a significant challenge. The volume, detail, and complexity of the newly acquired data required the design of a new processing pipeline capable of integrating seamlessly with existing data standards while enhancing them rather than fundamentally replacing them. This approach preserved the existing knowledge embedded in long-established standards, supported the adoption of a new technical framework, and facilitated user acceptance.

To ensure reliable and uninterrupted operation of the system, all public-facing services and data delivery interfaces and applications were migrated to Microsoft Azure cloud infrastructure. This also provides scalable and resilient storage a

Return on Investment

The Mobile Mapping System (MMS) is used to collect primary data on roads (their components and inventory) within the central technical register of roads. MMS technology has brought increased security, speed and quality of data collection in the field and at the other hand more demanding subsequent processing in office conditions.
