Project Goal

Situational Awareness has resolved multiple business issues, including providing more insights than ever before on the movements of trains through our dark territory (dark territory is the area of Arc’s network which has no signalling and train movements are managed exclusively on Train Orders issued primarily over radio communications), as well as assisting the management of the workload of our network controllers.

The platform has elevated the availability of data that was stored disparately and siloed across our business, bringing it together in a single easy to use platform which can be accessed by anyone in the business.

Business Problem Solved

Arc Infrastructure currently has a limited visibility of situational awareness for trains, road rail vehicles (RRVs) and work on track and receives minimal data from wayside equipment. It has been a safety challenge for internal teams and operators to know where people and vehicles are on the network. Also, the demand by customers has increased, with requests for more information about train schedules and movements adding to the high volume of non-safety critical voice communication distracting network controllers from safety operations.

Implementing one centralised platform to visualise the dynamic network control environment has enabled Arc Infrastructure to use technology for data-driven decision making. The Situational Awareness platform has laid the foundation to strengthen our network operations and planning to drive safety and efficiency, and delivers high customer satisfaction.
