Fire and Emergency New Zealand

Project Goal

Faced with the challenges posed by Cyclone Gabrielle, a national civil defence emergency, Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) recognized the need for improved coordination and decision-making across emergency response agencies. Leveraging Esri’s ArcGIS toolset, FENZ established a Common Operating Picture (COP) to facilitate data sharing among government agencies to improve the widespread response and recovery efforts.

Business Problem Solved

FENZ created a COP that brought together multiple components of information from a range of sources into ArcGIS Online to be shared with relevant agencies to enable more informed decision making. By aggregating this complex information, FENZ made it easier for other agencies to maximise the benefits to their own crisis operations.

Technology Implemented

The COP was built entirely on ArcGIS Online, with key data being captured in-field by QuickCapture.

Development Team Biography

The project team was made up from FENZ's geospatial team (Phil Woods, Matt Donaldson, Craig McAlpine, Jaz Hamilton and Rebecca Lutz), the National and International Response Manager (Ian Duncan), and the Chief Data and Analytics Officer (Hamish McEwen)
