Business Problem Solved

Since the COVID-19 pandemic, telehealth has become an essential component of healthcare in the U.S. and throughout the world. While there are limitations to what care can be provided by telehealth, there are also common scenarios, such as populations in rural or remote areas, where telehealth is the only way to access specialty care when needed.

Quantifying value for telehealth services is often complex for benefits that are not part of standard financial accounting metrics. GIS analyses helped us develop several program success indicators including patient savings and evaluation of underserved communities. We developed a value model for patient savings based upon driving distance and driving time saved over traditional ‘in-person’ care scenarios. This model is computationally intensive and dependent on availability of driving statistics. The system allowed us to automate previously manual calculations and scale aggregate metrics to much larger populations, across multiple services.
