Project Goal
Founded by educator and National Geographic Explorer Ashley Lamb Sinclair, 2892 Miles To Go aims to engage youth, educators, storytellers, organizations with cutting-edge geospatial technology (e.g. ArcGIS StoryMaps) and geographic inquiry to generate a deeper understanding of the social, environmental, and cultural issues impacting their local communities across the United States. Together, teams will co-create community narratives and innovative solutions to foster more informed, emphatic and united communities.Business Problem Solved
There are 2892 miles between the two furthest points across the contiguous United States. Within each of these miles, stories and narratives of place, people, and histories are often mis-told, misrepresented or simply unacknowledged. These missing stories become gaps in our collective knowledge and serve as barriers to creating more informed, empathetic, and united communities. Since 2020, 2892 has engaged seven communities in an innovative geography education program to address these gaps, spark community-led solutions, and develop geospatial skills in the next generation.
Technology Implemented
2892 Miles To Go employs advanced ArcGIS StoryMaps, GIS, and MapMaker platforms to create digital collections that blend custom maps of each location with multimedia content that represent the voices and experiences of local community leaders, storytellers, educators, and youth.
Development Team Biography
Project lead: Ashley Lamb-Sinclair, National Geographic Explorer and award-winning educator, author, speaker, and consummate coalition-builder whose passion is to bring people together around a cause. Ashley founded 2892 Miles To Go, which collaborates with a collective of community leaders to engage with Esri resources in an effort to identify and create solutions to address environmental, social, and cultural issues impacting communities across the U.S. Among 2892’s advisory board and faculty is Anita Palmer, a National Geographic Explorer and GIS professional, who is collaborating on developing a new and exciting online mapping curriculum for educators and students. A past K-12 classroom educator, Anita is the president and co-owner of the woman owned business GISetc, an award winning education company that provides cutting-edge GIS professional development, geospatial curriculum and support to K-12 and post-secondary schools, educators and students.
